Albert Walla Obituary

Walla, Albert A.
Albert Anton (Al), 93, passed away peacefully at home on October 22, 2016. Born on a farm in Clarkson NE to Antonia and Albert Walla, Al lived most of his life in Stamford, CT.
Al is survived by his wife Lillian Rose (née Catalanello) for over 69 years. He graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and was a member of several honorary engineering societies. Al also served during WWII in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in France and the Philippines.
Al worked for various companies, Combustion Engineering, DuPont Company, Catalytic Construction Company, Chemico NYC, and General Electric Company.
After retirement Al volunteered in the canteen at the Stamford Chapter Red Cross Bloodmobile and officiated at polling places in Stamford for many years. He also helped the Stamford Samurai judo club to set up tournaments and drive participants to tournaments. Later he volunteered at the NYAC Judo club with tournaments. He loved to help friends and neighbors fix things. Al had an immense garden in his yard and he loved sharing his vegetables with his neighbors. Al and Lillian traveled the country and world following their children that included swimming events at the World Games for the Deaf, judo tournaments and the Peace Corps.
Al is predeceased by his sister, Eleanor Barnas and his brother, Anton. He is survived by his children, Rosemary Prettyman (John), Janice Stiffler, Albert (Jill Hartman), Nancy (Del Wynne), and John (Lisa Muran Walla). Al was a loving Grandfather to seven grandchildren Juliann, Adam, Aaron, Joseph, Abigail, Jack and Christopher, and four great-grandchildren Derek, Reagan Rose, Ethan and Riley. Al is also survived by his sister, Irene Nosal, and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 37 Schuyler Ave, Stamford, CT 06902. Friends may call at the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St, Stamford, CT 06905 on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to Father Thomas Coughlin, Dominican Missionaries for the Apostolates of the Deaf, 1011 Alton Ave, Madison, IL 62060.
