Mary Matanle Obituary
Mary Arlene Matanle (nee Stoker) passed away on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at the age of 92 at Northwest Hospital, Randallstown MD. Mary was born February 15, 1923 in Scipio Center, NY and lived for many years in Elmira, NY before moving to Owings Mills, MD in 2000. She was predeceased by her loving husband, R. Keith Matanle in 2010. She is survived by her two sons, Stephen (Betsy) of Reisterstown, MD and Richard (Cathleen) of Glen Rock, NJ; seven grandchildren, Jeremy, Elizabeth, Molly, Caitlin, Patrick, Lynn and James and three great grandchildren. Mary received her R.N. degree from Syracuse University Memorial Hospital and was a charge nurse there upon graduation. She was a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War II, serving at the 372nd Station Hospital in Kaliakunda, India. She later worked as an office nurse for Dr. Harold Walker in Elmira and for 21 years as a geriatric nurse at Elcor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Horseheads, NY. Mary was beautiful, strong, generous, thoughtful and fun loving. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her. THERE WILL BE NO PUBLIC SERVICES. INTERMENT OF MARY'S ASHES WILL BE HELD IN ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY, ARLINGTON, VA BESIDE HER HUSBAND KEITH, THE LOVE OF HER LIFE. Memorial donations may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, 304 N. Main St., Elmira, NY 14901 or a favorite charity. The Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, Owings Mills, MD has been entrusted with arrangements.

When I was 19 I worked at Elcor & Mary was my boss, She was a good boss & smart, & taught me so much.... I wanted to be a nurse then but I was poor & young. She encouraged me & I thought she was beautiful...I remember thinking I want to be her when I grow up...thru the years I often thought of her & wondered what became of her...last I knew she lived on Maple Avenue Elmira...I relocated but did get into nursing..I always wanted to tell her what a difference she made in my life...she was a very caring nurse & I'm proud to have worked & learned from her , when I was just a kid...

Your mother was a wonderful and kind woman. I have many memories of our parents having a lot of fun back in the day. So sorry to hear of her passing.

My sincere condolences to Mary's family. I worked with Mary at Elcor; she taught me a great deal. She was a wonderful nurse and a wonderful person who made an impact on my life and I'm sure many others. She certainly left her mark here and will be missed.
