Sample, Jr., Richard H. Richard H. Sample Jr., age 86, of Big Flats, passed away at his home on Wednesday, April 29, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. Richard worked for Corning Glass Works from 1944 to 1984. He is survived by his wife, Pat Sample of Big Flats; son, Timothy J. Sample of Big Flats; daughter, Susan (Joseph) Strong of Southport; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Kevin R. Sample on January 9, 2007. Calling hours will be held Friday, May 1, 2015, from 4-7 p.m. at Acly-Stover Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2015, at St. Vincent De Paul Church. Committal prayers and Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Corning.

Schmitt, Joan O'Hara  
Schmitt, Joan O'Hara Age 80, passed away February 4, 2015 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Joan was born April 9, 1934, in Elmira, the daughter of the late Charles D. O'Hara and Bernice Butler O'Hara. She is also predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Francis C. Schmitt. Surviving Joan are children: Charles Francis (Betsy) Schmitt of Jacksonville FL, Mary Elizabeth (Tom) Hartman of Huntersville NC and Joan Marie (Kirk) Fedor of Elmira; grandchildren: Christopher Francis and Patrick Connor Schmitt, Emma Kate and Alex Thomas Hartman, Daniel Patrick and Megan Elizabeth Fedor; sister and brother-in-law Kathleen and James Judge of Silver Spring MD; along with several nieces and nephews. Joan earned her B.S. from the College of Mount St. Vincent in 1956. Upon graduation she was a Second Grade Teacher in Lloyd Harbor NY. She left teaching to raise her family. In 1969 she returned to Elmira when Frank was transferred with Thatcher Glass. Joan was a firm believer in education and went on to earn her M.S. from Elmira College in 1987. There was only one hobby she loved more than reading, and that was writing. Joan was a proud member of the Elmira Writer's Club. She was also a member of the League of Women Voters and a volunteer at the Community Kitchen. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes/Christ the Redeemer Parish for the past 45 years. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 11:00 a.m., Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Joan's family would like to thank everyone from the Elderwood Memory Care Unit for the outstanding care given Joan the past few years. Arrangements by McInerny Funeral Home.

SOUTHARD, Richard C. Of Woodruff, SC and formerly of Horseheads, NY passed away peacefully on Friday morning, April 10, 2015 at the age of 61. Rick was born on January 31, 1954 in Elmira, NY. He graduated from Horseheads High School class of 1973. Rick was employed by LRC/Thomas and Betts as a supervisor for several years, and was a coach for several years for CYO Basketball and Horseheads Little League. Rick is pre-deceased by his beloved son, Tim Southard, wife, Susan Southard, mother, Florence Stuck and siblings Deanna and Jim. Rick is survived by his son, Andrew (Amanda) Southard of Spokane, WA; stepchildren, Melissa Messner, and James (Becki) Messner both of Big Flats, NY; grandchildren, Timothy and Levi Southard, and Peyton and Brycen Messner; brothers and sisters, twin brother Randy (Lynn) Southard of Horseheads, NY, Fred (Liz) Southard of Pine City, NY, Mary (James) Bush of Horseheads, NY, and Charlotte (Al) McMilin of Helena, MT; Aunt, Loretta Meade of Ithaca, NY; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and his four legged companion, Sophie. Relatives and friends are invited to Rick's Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Mary Our Mother Church, Horseheads, NY on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 9:30 AM. Rick will be laid to rest alongside his son in Maple Grove Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Stahle, Onalee V.  
Stahle, Onalee V. Age 90, of Elmira Heights, NY, passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility. She was born on May 4, 1924 in Gaines, PA to the late Clifton and Iva (Hurlburt) Jacobs. Onalee was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Stahle; son, Eugene Stahle; sister, Kay Jacobs and son-in-law, James Weaver. She is survived by her son, Keith Stahle of Elmira; daughters, Linda (Jerry) Comfort of Horseheads, Bonny (Fran) Farren of Elmira Heights, Diane Weaver of Horseheads and Nancy (Don) Manwaring of Erin; brothers, Sheldon (Valerie) Jacobs of CO, Duane (Georgia) Jacobs of North Tonawanda, NY and Harold Jacobs of New Mexico; sister, Carol (Ken) Thompson of Angelica, NY; 18 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; 30 great-great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews. Onalee was a longtime member of Elmwood Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Oddfellas, Rebekah, Eastern Star and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was an avid bowler and belonged to the 600 club. Family and friends are invited to call on Wednesday, May 6th from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Elmwood Baptist Church, 230 Elmwood Ave., Elmira Heights. Funeral services will follow there at 3 p.m. with Rev. David Sullivan officiating. The family would like to thank the staff on the 6th floor at the Chemung County Nursing Facility for the wonderful care given to Onalee. Arrangements have been entrusted to the James D. Barrett Funeral Home.

STRAIT, RICKY DAVID Age 56 of Millport, NY passed away on Tuesday April 28, 2015. He was born on March 4, 1959 in Elmira, NY to Lewis and Yvonne Hill Strait. He rode in charity motorcycle rides as one of his favorite things. Mr. Strait was pre-deceased by his father; sisters: Sue Johnson and Roseanne Barone. Ricky is survived by his loving wife Lauren Powers Strait; daughters: Susan Marie Strait and Melissa Gray and Sam Dimmick; 7 grandchildren and his mother Yvonne Strait. It was the families choice to have no prior services. Arrangements entrusted to the LYNCH FUNERAL HOME 318 WEST BROAD STREET HORSEHEADS, NY.
