Age 89, passed away on November 6, 2012. Born August 7, 1923 in Elmira, NY. He was predeceased by his parents, John Coletta and Antoinette DiGironimo of Campobasso, Italy; his brothers, John, James, Nicholas; and sisters, Philomena, Josephine, and Mary; an infant great-grandson, John Michael; also his beloved friend and companion, Betty Tota. Daniel is survived by two daughters, Patricia Coletta Troccia of Horseheads, NY (Michael Berhannan), Geralyn Coletta Nicholson of Hopkinsville, KY (Daniel Nicholson); and one son, Daniel Montgomery Coletta of St. Paul, IN (Jaulane Coletta); grandchildren, Chad Troccia of Savannah, GA, Alisa and Jason Parmenter and Jessica and Matt Sena, both of Horseheads, NY, Laura Kay Eltringham of TN, Daniel David Nicholson of KY, Kara Mia Nicholson of Elmira, Amber and Jim Conklin of Pine City, Toni and Richard Granger of Elmira, Mark Coletta of Dayton, OH, Matt Coletta of Watertown, NY, Joshua Coletta of KY, and Micha and Malachi Coletta of St. Paul, IN; seven great-grandchildren, Jordan, Lake, Payton, Breielle, Conner, Jonathan, and Alivia. Also survived by his former wife and mother of his three children, Joyce Montgomery, Coletta, Erway of St. Paul, IN; special cousins, Anna O'Buck and Theresa GiaMichael of Elmira; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Daniel served in the US Army infantry in the South Pacific during World War II. He belonged to the local, State and National Teachers Association. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Elmira Council #229 & Rev. Henry F. Adamski 4th Degree Assembly #741 and the Elmira Heights American Legion. He was a ballroom dancing enthusiast and physical fitness advocate. He graduated in 1943 from Southside High School where he was undefeated in wrestling and boxing. He graduated from Ithaca College and Cortland State Teachers College. He also wrestled for Ithaca College. He worked at Sts. Peter and Paul's School and was the athletic director of the Neighborhood House for two years. Dan taught for 30 years in the Elmira Heights School District. He was a coach, teacher, and referee in (all) sports, and a Driver's Ed. instructor in all area schools for students and adults. He worked 25 years at the Chemung County Fairgrounds. Fifteen years volunteered at St. Joseph's Hospital and belonged to the Nocturnal Adoration Society for seven years. He was a communicant of the Blessed Sacrament Parish of Elmira. The family will receive relative and friends for calling hours at Kalec Funeral Home on Church St. in Elmira, NY on Sunday, November 11, 2012, from 1-4 p.m. A prayer service will be held there Monday, November 12th, at 10:15 a.m. followed by his Mass of Christian Burial and celebration of life at 11:00 a.m. in Sts. Peter and Paul's Church, Elmira. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Sts. Peter and Paul's cemetery. Memorial donations can be made in Daniel's name to a or the Blessed Sacrament Parish, 604 Park Place, Elmira, NY 14901. Dear Dad and Grandpa, your support, encouragement, and wise words that you always shared will be forever missed. We love you!
