Corning: Douglas L. Lovell, age 87, a lifelong resident of Corning, died Tuesday, January 1, 2013, at Corning Hospital. Doug was born on November 20, 1925, in Caton to Vernon and Susan (Thomas) Lovell. Doug served his country during World War II
in the Army in the Asiatic - Pacific regions. He married Marjorie Woodhouse in 1953 in Corning. He owned and drove school bus, transporting rural students to school prior to the present day busing system. Doug was an original organizer and founder in 1960 of the East Corning Volunteer Fire Department and was elected as its Fire Chief serving from 1962 to 1967. He was the manager of the Wash Mart and Avis car rental next to Foodmart and retired after a 25-year career. He most recently worked as a guard at the yard gate at Corning Building Company for 18 years. Doug was elected and served as a councilman in the Town of Corning from 1991 to 2009. Doug was a member of the VFW
, American Legion, Mutual Vigilance Society, and the South Corning Senior Citizens. He was well known for his big smile, kind greetings, and helpfulness to family and community. These are qualities that Doug would never let go. He will be missed by many. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marge; two daughters: Margaret (Ralph) Ruvolo of Painted Post and Christine Lovell of West Palm Beach, FL; two sons: Brian (Marilyn) Lovell of Hillsboro, NH, and Stephen (Judy) Lovell of Big Flats; grandchildren: Michael (Kim), Mark, Jennifer, Kristen, Seth, and Sara; three great grandchildren: Lindsay, Michael, and Sadie; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Doug was predeceased by his brother, Vern Lovell. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, January 6 from 2-5 PM at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc., 216 E. First Street, Corning where funeral services will be on Monday at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Corning. The family will provide flowers and asks that donations be made to the East Corning Volunteer Fire Department in Doug's name.
