Picco, Gennaro R. "Jerry"
Gennaro R. "Jerry" Picco, 84, of Waverly, NY, died Wednesday, October 17, 2013 at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA following a brief illness. Born in Sayre on October 20, 1928, he was the son of Pasquale and Josephine (Ciccarelli) Picco. Jerry grew up in Waverly and was a graduate of Waverly High School class of 1947. After high school, he began working in a print shop where he learned his trade as a printer. Jerry served in the National Guard from 1948 to 1952; he then enlisted in the United States Navy
where he served in the Korean Conflict
. He was Honorably Discharged on May 15, 1954. After his discharge, Jerry continued working for Moore's Printing. In 1962, he began working as a printer for the Elmira Star Gazette where he worked for 31 years, retiring in 1993 as Advertising Production Manager. Jerry was a local business man, a member and officer of the Roma Madre Lodge No. 1342, Order of the Sons of Italy, and a communicant and active member of the Blessed Trinity Parish, St. James Catholic Church. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was married on November 19, 1963 in Williamsport, PA to the former Bianca Mercaldo who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Dr. Pasquale (Laura) Picco of Hornell, NY and Dr. Joseph (Jacqueline) Picco of Waverly, NY; one daughter, Dr. Lori (Drew Walker) Picco of Washington, DC; eight grandchildren, Nicholas, Gennaro, Pasquale, and Marco Picco; Capria, Gianna, and Gabriella Picco; and Dominic Walker; and his special friends from his coffee club at McDonald's. In addition to his parents, Jerry was predeceased by his infant brother, Arturo Picco in 1929. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11a.m. on Monday, October 21, 2013 at Blessed Trinity Parish, St. James Catholic Church, Waverly, N.Y with Rev. William Moorby as celebrant. Interment will be private in the Wildwood Cemetery, Williamsport, PA. The family of Gennaro R. "Jerry" Picco will receive friends on Sunday, October 20, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Alteri-Bowen Funeral Home, 314 Desmond St. Sayre, PA and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday morning.
