Age 64, of Elmira, NY, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at home. He was born in Moore Haven, FL on May 29, 1949 to the late Henry Lee and Mae Willie Thomas. He moved to Elmira at an early age and was better known as "Shorty". He loved to ride his bike and hang out with the Gush's Crew. Once a year he made sure to visit his nieces, nephews and Aunt Juanita in Lakeland, FL. Shorty was predeceased by his sister, Beatrice Brooks. He leaves to cherish his memories a brother, Eddie Charles Hayes of Elmira; nieces, Bridget (Reginald) Thomas, Barbara Thomas, Regina Carter, Cathy Thomas and Marie Brooks; nephews, James Thomas and John Brooks Jr.; uncle, Eddie Green (Helen) Mallard; special aunt, Juanita Mallard; 15 great nieces and nephews; 32 great-great nieces and nephews all of Lakeland, FL; a host of cousins from Geneva, NY and special friends from the Gush's Crew and Chemung County ARC. Family and friends are invited to call on Wednesday, February 26 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the James D. Barrett Funeral Home. Funeral services will take place there at 12:30 p.m. with Rev. Johnny Vaughn officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.
