"Johny"

Passed into Heaven on Wed. Jan. 29, 2014 at the age of 100 at her Horseheads home.

Born on July 25, 1913 in Elmira in an Ice House along the Chemung River, Johny was the daughter of the late, Alvin & Carrie Baker Scott. She grew up in Daggett, Pa and attended a one room school house there. Johny graduated from Mansfield College attaining her teaching degree in elementary education. Her first teaching position was at the same one room school house she herself attended in Daggett, PA. She would devoted the rest of her life to educating youth in Port Alleghany, PA; Rome, NY; Albuquerque, NM where she was instrumental in the development of state provided kindergarten classes in that state. In 1998 she returned to Elmira. Thru out her life she enjoyed homemade pottery and taught pottery making. Johny was predeceased by her loving husband, George Baker with whom she shared many wonderful years. Surviving are her many loving nieces and nephews along with her lifelong friend, and in later years loving companion, Joseph "Joe" Eighmey. Family and friends will be received at Caywood's Funeral Home & Gardens, 1126 Broadway, Southport/Elmira on Mon Feb. 3, 2014 between the hours of 4-6 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 6:15 p.m. with burial at the family's convenience in Gillett Cemetery. A special thank you to Dr. Edward Foster of his many years of friendship and care he provided Johny and also to Care First and care givers for making it possible for her to remain in her home, which was one of her last wishes.
