Jane Morss Meyer

Meyer, Jane Morss

McLean, VA: Jane Morss Meyer of McLean, VA, died unexpectedly at her home on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, a few days after celebrating her 92nd birthday with family at Kazan's, her favorite restaurant. She was born to Hume Morss and Margaret Kuett Morss in Elmira, NY, where she grew up and made many lifelong friends. She graduated from Swarthmore College in 1944 and married Stewart C. Meyer. His Army career moved them frequently to locations throughout the United States and to Germany. Jane's goals were to have her family enjoy what each place offered and to leave the landscape in better condition than she found it -- and she did. In midlife, Jane had a successful career as a logistic support analyst for RAC and ERC in McLean. She thoroughly enjoyed the challenges of her work and the many friends she made there. After her divorce, Jane settled into her home in McLean. At the time of her death, she enjoyed good health and active engagement with family and friends. She was a regular gym member, an avid gardener, and thoroughly enjoyed many trips with extended family to Anguilla where she loved snorkeling and her many friends there. She was active in the Fairfax County Master Gardener program and supplied family and friends every year with what seemed like hundreds of tomato plants she grew from seed. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and a caring friend and relative who was a good example to all who knew her. She is survived by an extended family whom she loved and enjoyed. They include her brother, Paul Morss and his wife Betsy of Horseheads, NY; her three daughters, Anne Parker and her husband Jerome, Peggy Surdyk and her husband Tom, KK Meyer and her husband Steven Seligman; her granddaughters, Katie Surdyk Dorsey and her husband Chris, Morgan Surdyk Francis and her husband Adam; her great-granddaughter and namesake, Jane Dorsey; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Peter; her sister, Nan Ward; and brother-in-law, Bill. The family will host a celebration of Jane's life at her home in McLean on April 12. She will be buried this summer in her family plot in Elmira, NY. Memorial donations may be made to Hope Clinic (hopeclinicnc.org) or the Salvation Army. Murphy Funeral Homes is providing the arrangements.
