James, Janet Hartman

Age 79, a longtime resident of Elmira, NY, passed away on Monday, November 4, 2013 at Elcor Health Services in Horseheads, NY. Janet was born August 9, 1934 in Elmira, NY to the late Dorothy Barchet and George Hartman. Along with her parents, Janet was predeceased by her daughter Valerie Shea in 2007 and her brother Glenn Hartman. She is survived by her loving children, Paul (Martha) James of Watertown, NY, Barry (Barbara) James of Elmira, NY, Douglas James of Riviera Beach, FL, and Gregory (Shelley) James of Elmira, NY; and six grandchildren, Daniel (Tamra) James of Rochester, NY, Nicole (Corey) LaRoche of Manchester, NH, Brandon, Lauren, Gregory, and Ava James of Elmira, NY. Janet is also survived by her son-in-law Joseph Shea of Clifton Park, NY; brothers Garey (Dixie) Hartman and Gerald (Cheri) Hartman all of Melbourne, FL; brother George (Susan) Hartman of Horseheads, NY; and sister Gloria (Gordon) Samson of Horseheads; NY; sister-in-law Susan Hartman of The Villages, FL; two nieces and several nephews. Janet was raised in Pine Valley, NY and graduated from Horseheads High School. She worked numerous jobs throughout her life to support her family. She retired from the New York State Academy of Fire Science in Montour Falls, NY. Many will also remember Janet as a longtime bartender at Dad's Den in Elmira, NY. Family was extremely important to Janet, and her home was always open to not only her children but their friends as well. She was a "second mother" to many of her children's friends. Friends and neighbors knew that they were always welcome in Janet's home. When her children were young, she volunteered her time with Cinderella Softball, the Girl Scouts, the Boys Scouts, Mark Twain Little League, and she taught Sunday School classes. Janet's hobbies included bowling, golfing, and traveling. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Elmira, NY. For the last several years, Janet had been afflicted with Alzheimer's disease and resided at Elcor Health Services. Although her disease erased her memory, the memories she has left and the lives that she has touched will always be remembered. The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff at Elcor Health Services for the compassionate care given to their mother. Friends are invited to call New Beginnings United Methodist Church, 300 East Miller Street, Elmira, NY on Sunday, November 10, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held following calling hours at 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Janet's name may be directed to New Beginnings United Methodist Church, 300 East Miller Street, Elmira, NY 14904. Arrangements have been entrusted with the James D. Barrett Funeral Home.
