Storch, John Franklin

Age 88, of Elmira, passed away on April 7 in Lake Wales, FL, his winter residence. John was born in Rochester, NY to Grove and Elizabeth Bach Carson on November 14, 1925. Upon the death of his mother shortly after his birth, he was adopted by his mother's first cousin, Lucie Wentz Storch and husband, Fritz Storch in Elmira. John graduated from Southside High School. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II, seeing action at the Battle of Iwo Jima. After the war he returned to Elmira and married Ruth Lois Bennett. They were married for 55 years until her death on April 4, 2002. John worked first as a machinist before joining the United States Postal Service, where he was a mail carrier for 25 years. He was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church and later attended Hillcrest Baptist Church. John loved music and was a gifted piano player and singer. For many years he sang in a men's gospel quartet and sang in church choirs well into his eighties. He especially enjoyed walking and working on cars, restoring several with his son. John is survived by his three children: daughter, Susan Storch of Lebanon, NJ; son, Lorin Storch and daughter-in-law, Roxanne Grover; daughter, Karen Storch of Elmira and her children: grandson, Aaron Stanbro and granddaughter, Elissa Stanbro of West Chester, PA. The funeral service will be held at Hillcrest Baptist Church, 115 West Hill Rd. Elmira, NY 14903 on Tuesday, April 15 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Woodlawn National Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded Mr. Storch. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to the in John's name.
