ANDREWS, L. Duane

L. Duane Andrews, age 86 and a lifetime member of the Pine City Community, passed away at home Sunday, December 4th, 2011 after a hard fought battle with cancer. Duane was born in Elmira, NY to the late Leon and Marie (Lockner) Andrews on March 27th, 1925. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his first wife, Lois; brothers G. Raymond and Arden; sister-in-law Ethel Lott; and mother-in-law Altia Lott. Surviving Duane are his wife, Lelia Andrews; sons David of Gillett, PA, Daniel (Cathie) of Pine City, NY; daughter-in-law Therese Andrews of Elmira; sister Eloise Gage of Horseheads, NY; grandsons Christopher of Elmira, Jeffrey in the United States Marine Corp, Jeremy in the United States Navy; sister-in-law Alixe Andrews of Pine City; step-children Sharon (Dan) Spencer of Granville Summit, PA, James (Sheila) Comfort of Horseheads, Gary (Linda) Comfort of Chambersburg, PA, JoAnne Comfort of Elmira and Diane Comfort of Horeheads; several nieces and nephews; several step-grandchildren and great grandchildren. Duane was a decorated United States Army veteran for three years in the South Pacific during World War II, serving in the 37th Infantry Division. Duane retired from the N.Y. Telephone Co. in 1982 after 36 years of service, starting out as a garage mechanic and retiring as an engineer, but holding many jobs in between including line-man, installer, cable splicer, and foreman. He was a long standing faithful member of the Pine City Baptist Church, serving in many different positions and being instrumental in raising funds for the present building, and keeping the building and grounds maintained. He was a charter member of the Pine City Sportmen's Club, having helped build the original club house; honorary life time member of the Lakewood's Sportsmen's Club (The Jolly Boys) and a member of the South Creek Northern Tier Sportsmen's Club. He was a past president of the Chemung County Federation of Sportsmen, having been instrumental in starting some of the programs still in place today. He was very involved with Boy Scout Troop #43 of Pine City while his sons were in scouting. Duane was an avid lifelong hunter and fishermen who loved everything about the outdoors. He made many trips to Wyoming and the Adirondacks with his sons and friend Clairmont Ham deer hunting and many trips to Lake Ontario and the finger lakes fishing. He always loved working around his house, gardening and mowing and growing beautiful flowers, but his greatest love was spending time with his family and having helped build both of their homes, and very proud of his grandsons. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue, Elmira, NY Wednesday, December 7th, 2011 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Funeral and committal services will be held at the conclusion of the calling hours at 8:00 PM. The Reverend Horrace Stoddard will officiate. Private graveside services with full military honors will be accorded in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, NY. In lieu of flowers, those wishing please make memorials in L. Duane Andrews name to the Southern Tier Hospice and Palliative Care, or to the Pine City Baptist Church Memorial Fund.
