Mel Andell, formerly of Wayland, MA, died peacefully at home in Elmira, NY on July 29th at the age of 90. He left his wife, Sylvia, and his children, Andy and Debby Freeman, Jim and Michele Freeman, Nancy Andell, Debby Andell and Greg Voss. Also his grandchildren, Annie, Will, Sarah, Becca, Alyssa, Kate and Daniel. Mel was born in Boston and graduated from Boston Latin School and the University of Pennsylvania Dental School. After serving in the U.S. Army Dental Corps he practiced orthodontics in Newton, MA. He was actively involved in both teaching and research at Harvard Dental School for more than fifty years and was loved by his students for his quick wit and dry humor. His many interests included Greek and Roman history, theater, travel, the Boston Symphony, sailing, squash, tennis and swimming. He intuitively learned how to use each new technological device and immensely enjoyed all of them. He will be missed by all those who were fortunate to have known him. Mel will have a family memorial service at a future date. Donations in his memory may be made to First Care/Southern Tier Hospice.
