Cardinale, Shirley Arlene

Shirley Arlene Cardinale, age 90, formerly of Campbell, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Friday, July 4, 2014 at Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira. Shirley was born January 15, 1924 in West Union, IA, the daughter of the late George D. and Helen (Johnston) Grimes. A WWII veteran, Shirley enlisted in the Waves in 1943 and was ultimately promoted to Chief Yeoman. During her years as a Wave in San Francisco, she met and married former Marine Maurice Cardinale. They moved to Iowa and raised a family while attending and graduating from Upper Iowa University. A beloved teacher of commercial arts at Woodhull High School and Campbell Central School, Shirley counseled and mentored many. She was the church organist at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Campbell for over 30 years. Music was always an important part of her life. A long-time baseball fan, she was knowledgeable about team and player stats for her favorite teams, the Mets and the Braves. Shirley also loved to read and was a crossword puzzle enthusiast. To all who knew her, Shirley was an intelligent, vibrant, loving woman. She brought grace and grit to the challenges in her life. When asked how she was doing, Shirley's favorite response was "I'm doing the best I can with what I've got to work with". She will be missed by many. She is survived by four daughters: Martha (Danny) Hoodak of Sioux Falls, SD, Christine Forester of Corning, NY, Theresa Cardinale of San Francisco, CA, Rosemarie (Michael Ryan) Elliott of Hamburg, NY and two sons: John (Vicky) Cardinale of Fort Worth, TX, Thomas (Carrie) Cardinale of Charlotte, NC and one stepdaughter: MaryEsther Allen of Scottsdale, AZ, and her brother Wayne Grimes of Waterloo, IA. Shirley was predeceased by her husband Maurice, daughter Catherine, granddaughter Kristen Hoodak, son-in-law Herb Tobey, and two brothers, Don and Tucker Grimes. Friends may call Tuesday July 8 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Phillips Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 17 W. Pulteney St. in Corning, rosary will be at 8:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, July 9 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 8508 Main Street, Campbell, NY. Burial with military honors will follow immediately at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery, 623 Franklin St., Elmira, NY.
