Shirley J. "Pidge" (Hughes) May, 82 of Lowman, NY passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility in Elmira, NY. She was born on October 11, 1931 in Lowman, NY, daughter of the late William and Louisa (Jones) Hughes. Shirley is survived by her beloved husband of 56 years, Gerald "Jug" May and three children of whom she was so proud: Michael (Kathy) May, Denise (Gary) Allen, and Ronald (Cindy Swingle) May. She had a special place in her heart for her grandchildren: Marcus May, Nicole (George) Apgar, Eric (Missy) Allen, Tina (Rob) Burtt, Amanda Allen, Alex Allen, Jason Swingle, Cory Swingle, and seven great grandchildren. Shirley is also survived by her loving sisters and brother: Glenora Gunderman, Janice (Lem) Pipher, Beverly (Edgar) Harland, Phyllis Lowman, Marilyn (Tom) Karski, Kenneth Hughes (Ruby Conley), her brother-in-law Robert May, and many much loved nieces and nephews. Shirley was predeceased by her parents, her sister Harriet Elston, brothers Paul and Eldon Hughes, sisters-in-law Maggie Hughes and Betty May, brothers-in-law Kenneth Elston, Ronald (Cooper) Gunderman, Edward Isaacs, and James Lowman. Shirley or Pidge, whichever name you prefer, was a special gift from God. She loved her deep rooted large family and always had a caring smile for everyone. A special thank-you to the Chemung Nursing Facility 6th floor staff (past and present) and to her niece Melanie Lowman for the attentive care she received. Family and friends are welcome to call from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday May 1, 2014 and again from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 2, 2014 at the Roberts Funeral Home, Inc. 279 Main Street Wellsburg, NY. The funeral service to honor Shirley's life will be held at the conclusion of the viewing at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 2 at the funeral home with her pastor, Rev Bernard "Chip" Possee officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of Shirley's family in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
