Duane Olthof Obituary

Olthof, Duane E.

Elmira: age 82, passed away on Friday February 11th, 2011 at Chemung County Nursing Facility. Duane was born on June 30th, 1928, the son of the late Otho J. and Lucy McFarland Olthof. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; sons, Randy (Patricia) Olthof of Elmira, NY, and Alan (Betsy) Olthof of Elkland, PA; grandchildren, Tim Olthof, Elmira, NY, Emily (Darrell) Johns of Big Flats, NY, Katrina Olthof of Horseheads, NY, and Kristin Olthof of Painted Post, NY; great grandchildren, Violet Johns, and Murphy Johns. Along with his parents, Duane was predeceased by his brothers Robert Olthof and Clinton Olthof and grandson, Scott Olthof. Duane graduated from Southside High School in 1947 and attended luncheons once a month with his former classmates that he graduated with. He was a Toolmaker and Foreman for Serios Manufacturing in Southport, NY and also a foreman for two years at American LaFrance in Elmira, NY, retiring after 18 years of service as a supervisor for Emerson Power Transmissions in Ithaca, NY. At the age of 14, Duane proudly became an Eagle Scout, and he also belonged to De Molay, a junior organization for the Mason's Club while in high school. He was past President and member of the Gold Card Club. Duane served in the United States Air Force and was a member since 1963 of the Pennsylvania Avenue United Methodist Church, Pine City NY. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and gardening. Family and friends are invited to call to at Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue Elmira/Southport, on Monday February 14th, 2011 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM with Funeral and Committal Service there Monday at 4:00 PM, where his Pastor William Vallet will officiate. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family. A 'Candle of Remembrance' may be left for the family in obituaries at www.olthof.com

Carol and family,

I am so sorry to see Duane's name in the obituaries. There were many times he would take the time to speak to me when I came home for visits, but I missed seeing him on my last visit. I really appreciate the times he did stop to talk to me. God Bless you and give you strength through this difficult time.
