Age 76 of Elmira, NY. He was born February 8, 1936 in Elmira, son of the late Catherine (Stempin) Evans and Robert A. Evans and passed away Monday, June 25, 2012 at home with his family by his side. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters Dorothy V. Davis and Patricia A. Rupp; brothers Bernard R. Evans and James F. Evans. John is survived by his loving wife of almost 50 years (September 8, 2012) Mary; son and daughter-in-law John T., Jr. and Amanda Evans; grandchildren Tyler, Molly and Camryn Evans all of Columbus, OH; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Betty Evans of FL, Dorothy and Alex Reynolds of Horseheads, Jean Ann Randall of Horseheads, Joseph Christastie of Elmira and Bob and Helen Christastie of NJ along with several nieces, and nephews. John was employed with Thatcher Glass for 25 years and retired from NYS DOT after 11 years of service. He was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Parish; a member of the Elmira Nocturnal Adoration Society, Perpetual Adoration Chapel at St. Casimir's Church and 30 years at the Notre Dame retreat house. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard serving for 8 years; a member of the F.O.E. #941, Elmira Elks #62, American Legion Post 154, the Tuesday morning Senior Golf League at Mark Twain; a volunteer delivering Meals on Wheels and was one of the morning group at the Elmira McDonalds. Family and friends are invited to visit Walter J. Kent Funeral Home, 858 Lake St. at Washington Ave., Elmira on Wednesday, June 27th from 4 to 7 pm. Prayers will be offered there on Thursday, June 28th at 9:30 am followed by his Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in Ss. Peter & Paul Church. Rev. Richard T. Farrell, Celebrant. Committal prayers and interment will follow in St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may remember John through donations to Southern Tier Hospice & Palliative Care, 11751 E. Corning Rd., Corning, NY 14830.
