Hughes-Banks, Mary Elizabeth

Age 55, of Southport, NY, passed away peacefully at home after a courageous and strong battle on March 25, 2014. She is survived by her loving husband, William; daughter, Christina Sowers (Matt) of Rochester, NY; son, James (Emily); grandchildren, Patrick "The Hurricane", Elizabeth and Madilyn; father-in-law, Frank Banks; brother, Martin Hughes (Annie); sisters-in-law, Marybeth Hersh, Nancy Santobianco (Thomas); brother-in-law, Mark Banks; numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her father, William Hughes; mother, Loretta Hughes; stepmother, Karen Hughes; mother-in-law, Helen Banks. Mary worked at the Elmira City Bus Garage for over 30 years. She served as a union president and vice president for many years. She was the brains and backbone of their family's many business adventures (Banks Brothers Vending, pool league, Gaspara's Arcade, Dry Horizon, Banksie's Bar and Grill, Ice Cream Stand). Mary was known as "The Favorite Aunt". Her greatest joy was her children and especially her three grandchildren. Mary had many amazing memories at their cabin in the ADK, fishing, floating in the river, and hiking. She loved to watch the Yankees and Buffalo Bills play. She enjoyed the family trips to the ocean with her feet in the sand. Our family would like to thank all of the nurses at the Falck Cancer Center, Roswell Park Cancer Institute staff, Nancy, Marybeth and all of her devoted friends for their support and love. FRIENDS MAY CALL AT THE BAKER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME ON FRIDAY, MARCH 28, FROM 4PM-6PM. FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT THE FUNERAL HOME ON SATURDAY, MARCH 29, AT 10:30 AM, REVEREND RICK FARRELL OFFICIATING. INTERMENT WILL FOLLOW IN ST. PETER AND PAUL'S CEMETERY, ELMIRA, NY.
