Smith, Merilyn D.

Merilyn D. Smith, 81, of 55 West Shore Dr., Spencer, passed away peacefully with her family in attendance on February 25, 2014. Merilyn was born on February 9th, 1933 in Spencer to Issac and Helena (Riker) Decker. She was predeceased by her parents and two children, Denise and Neil. She is a graduate of Spencer Central School and SUNY Cortland. She taught elementary school at Watkins Glen and Spencer Van Etten until her retirement in 1988. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Spencer. In her retirement Merilyn enjoyed traveling with her beloved husband of 59 years, Neil, and watching her children and grandchildren grow, was an avid bowler, bridge, and golf player. She will be forever loved and remembered fondly by countless friends and family. Merilyn and Neil have a home that many consider a second home on the lake. Her love and kindness for all is far reaching. She is survived by her husband, Neil; daughters, Rhonda McCray (Mike), Tamara Smith; grandchildren, Reta and David Elston and Robert McCray; sisters, Peggy Blomquist (Larry) of Newfield and Ruth "Teeny" Smith (Dave) of Spencer; sister-in-law, Carol Lent of Van Etten; brother-in-law, Steve Smith of West Babylon, NY; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families. A celebration of Merilyn's life will be held Sunday, March 2nd, 2:00 p.m. at the Federated Church in Spencer.
