Kaufman, Murray L.
Age 81, of Horseheads, NY, died on March 25, 2013 with his loving family by his side. He was born in the Bronx, NY, the son of Abraham and Rose Kaufman. Murray was a veteran of the United States Air Force and served in the Korean War. He attended colleges in New York and Florida and earned his Masters in Social Work from SUNY Buffalo in 1966. He worked as a Social Worker at Rockland Psychiatric Center and moved to Elmira to assume the position of Director of Social Work and later Unit Chief at the Elmira Psychiatric Center. Murray loved history, music, his cats, and working on his cars but, most of all, he treasured time spent with his family. He was active in the former Temple B'nai Israel. Murray is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Linda; daughter, Cynthia (Richard) Noble of McMinnville, OR; son, Eric (Kelly) Kaufman of Hudson, OH; and daughter, Joanne Kaufman of Albany, NY; grandchildren, Joshua Mendenhall, Erica Brechtelsbauer, Alec Brechtelsbauer, and Andrew Brechtelsbauer. Predeceased by his parents, Abraham and Rose Kaufman; sister, Phyllis Margolin; and brother, Harvey Kaufman. There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held at Congregation Kol Ami, 1008 W. Water St., Elmira, on Friday, March 29, 2013, at 11:00 a.m.; Rabbi Miriam Biatch and Spiritual Leader, Abraham Golos officiating. Interment will follow at the Temple B' Nai Israel Cemetery, Elmira, with Full Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make memorial contributions to Congregation Kol Ami, 1008 W. Water Street, Elmira, NY 14905; the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, 388 Upper Oakwood Avenue, Elmira, NY 14903; or the Salvation Army, 414 Lake St., Elmira, NY 14901.
