BENEDICT, Raymond E.

Age 81 of Walnut St. in Elmira passed away unexpectedly January 12, 2014. He was born in Elmira, NY to J. LaRoy and Margarette (Moore) Benedict on December 30, 1932. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen (Ryan) Benedict; daughters, Deborah (Ronald) Bohlayer of Prattsburgh, NY, Jennifer (Phil) Amandro of Ft. Meyers, FL; 11 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren; sisters, Lois Hilderbrandt of Summerfield, FL, Joan Donnarummo of Canton, OH; several nieces and nephews and a host of caring friends. He was also predeceased by sons, David and Ronald Benedict, and Brother, Philip Benedict. Ray was retired from Verizon Telephone where he was an engineer for over 40 years. He was an active communicant of St. Mary Our Mother Church in Horseheads. Ray was a member and past president of Council Telephone Pioneers, AARP Tax Program District Coordinator of Chemung-Steuben and all of Western NY, Past Pres. and Treasure of Senior Notebook including Co-host of the Sunday Morning TV show. He was volunteer of Southport Town Hall, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and Eucharist Minister at St. Mary Our Mother Church. Ray was a Mildred Parfitt Recipient, Korean War Veteran and devoted humanitarian and community volunteer. Family and friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral home 413 S. Main St. Horseheads on Wednesday January 15, 2014 from 1-3:00 p.m. and again from 5-7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Mary Our Mother Church 816 W. Broad St. Horseheads, NY on Thursday January 16, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. with burial and military honors to follow in St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery in Elmira.
