Humphrey, Shirley

Age 85, of Elmira, died on Tuesday, March 4, 2014. She was born in Watertown, NY, daughter of Glen and Sibyl Guzewich. She is survived by her husband, John, who she married in 1952. She is also survived by her sons, Craig (Carole) Humphrey, San Diego, CA and Dennis (Dana) Humphrey, Edgewater, FL. She is also survived by a brother, Richard (Wanda) Guzewich, Port Orange, FL. Also survived by a grandson, Alex and by a granddaughter, Megan. Shirley was employed after graduating from Watertown High School by the New York State Department of Transportation in Watertown as a secretary. After moving to Elmira, she was employed by the Elmira School District Buildings and Grounds Department as a secretary, retiring in 1986. After retirement she volunteered at Meals on Wheels for over 20 years. She was also active in church activities, first at Centenary United Methodist Church and then by its successor, New Beginnings United Methodist Church. She enjoyed knitting, and along with other church members sent many knitted sweaters to Guidepost Inc. for distribution worldwide. Family and friends are invited to gather at the New Beginnings United Methodist Church 300 East Miller Street Elmira, NY 14904 on Saturday, March 22, 2014 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. A Memorial Service honoring Shirley's life will follow the visitation at 3 PM. The Reverend Leanne Zeck will celebrate her services. Memorial contributions in her name may be sent to New Beginnings United Methodist Church, to Meals on Wheels 150 Fox Street Elmira, NY 14901 or to Care First11751 East Corning Road Corning, NY 14830.
