Margeit, Thomas M. "Tom"
LODI: Thomas M. "Tom" Margeit, age 60, longtime resident of County Road 129, died on Monday, April 29, 2013 at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca, following a valiant battle against lung cancer. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 6:00PM on Friday, (May 3rd) at Covert Funeral Home, 7199 South Main Street in Ovid. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Bart Minson at 11:00AM on Saturday (May 4th) at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Ovid. The family would kindly request, that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Tom's name be directed to the Lodi Fire Department, PO Box 299, Lodi, NY 14860. Tom was born on September 26, 1952 in Elmira, the eldest son of Thomas L. and Esther (Stermer) Margeit. He was a graduate of Horseheads High School and Alfred Tech. Tom worked for many years as a butcher throughout the area, and continued to process deer from home. He worked as a corrections officer at Auburn Correctional Facility, where he was a member of the CERT team. He then transferred to Willard Drug Treatment Center when it opened in 1995, working as a drill instructor before retiring as the Chief of Fire and Safety in 2009. Tom was the PT Instructor at the Fire Academy in Montour Falls for more than 10 years, working to within 3 weeks of his death. Since 1978 he has been a very proud member of the Lodi Fire Department, serving as the Chief since 1994, which included the Seneca County Chiefs Association. He willingly gave his time and talents to both the South Seneca Sportsmen's Club and Landmark Education. Tom's love of the outdoors was shown through his farming, hunting and fishing. Some of his most treasured moments were spent on the water. He enjoyed many fishing trips, both short and long, whether it was Seneca Lake or the ocean waters of Alaska. Tom's greatest passion in life was being an all around cowboy…steer wrestling, and roping. With his rodeo buddies he travelled the country extensively, competing on many levels and in national title events. As a devout Catholic, Tom lived by example as a loving family man, mentor and community member. In addition to his parents, Tom is survived by his wife of 35 years, Judy; his daughters and their families, Amy and Brian Kelly and their sons, Brayden and Liam of Elmira, Michelle and Justin Tingue and their children, Annabelle and Zack of Interlaken, Jennifer and Ryan Teeter and their daughter, Mia of Lovettsville, VA; a special nephew Robert and Roseanne Cooper and their children, Robert and Ruby of Interlaken; his siblings, Gayle (Ted) Pritchard, Wendy (Danny) Swearingen and Terry (Julie) Margeit, all of Horseheads, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and his wife's extended family.
