1926 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
Robert J. Richards Sr. Obituary
Richards, Robert J., Sr.

Robert J. Richards, Sr. of Caton, went to be with our Lord on Wednesday, August 6, 2014. Robert (Bob, also known to family and friends as Stinger) was born in Caton on September 30, 1926, where he lived his whole life. He attended Caton schools and in 1948 married the love of his life, Wanda Congdon Richards, who predeceased him in 2004. Bob is also predeceased by his mother, Mildred Crooker; his father, Robert Richards; brother, Bill Richards; and sisters, Donna Bisel and Gertrude Rorick. Bob is survived by his beloved children, who adored and admired their dad: Arletta (Butch) Allen, Robert, Jr. (Donna) Richards and Scott (Karen Severns) Richards. Bob is also survived by his grandchildren: Jeff (Shellie) Allen, Jodi (Luke) Thomas, John Allen, Robert Richards, Stephanie Richards, Chrissy (Terry) McConnell, Kimberly Richards, Samantha Richards, Elizabeth (Gary) Harvey and Rebecca Richards; ten great-grandchildren; his half-sister, Mary Bradshaw; and several nieces and nephews. His family was the light of his life. The little ones never left his house without a candy bar in hand. Bob worked many jobs, first on the family farm and then in several area factories. Before purchasing the grocery store in Caton in 1959, Bob worked at the State Line Market in Millerton, PA for several years. Bob and Wanda rarely took a day off, working side-by-side16 hours a day, Monday through Saturday, and eight hours on Sunday. The store became a "community center", where people would come to visit and share many stories and laughs. The little ones never left the store without a tootsie roll. Bob would smile and say that he was "taking care of future business". Bob and Wanda sold the store in 1987 and he went to work at Hilliard Corp. in Elmira for four more years. He also took care of the Margaret Smyers Memorial Park in Caton for 18 years. During that time, and until her death, Bob and Wanda made and sold hand-made crafts. In his later years, you would usually find him on his lawn tractor with his faithful friend Precious, a little dog Bob and Wanda rescued from the ASPCA. Bob loved country music and in his younger years was in a country band that played on the local Corning radio station on Saturday mornings. He could play most anything by ear and it was one of his passions. Bob had a natural sense of humor and a tremendous love for his family and friends and he will be truly missed by all. Family and friends are invited to call at Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service on Saturday, August 9, 2014 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow calling hours there at 4:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Caton Elmwood Cemetery on Monday, August 11, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to , 13 Beech St., Johnson City, NY 13790 To send condolences and memories to the family or light a candle for Robert go to www.phillipsfuneralhome.com
