Was born to Thomas and Genevieve Boler on 21 January 1929 in Omaha, Nebraska. He attended St. Margaret Mary grade school, Creighton Prep and Creighton University. He received a Masters in Philosophy at St. Louis University, and a PhD in Philosophy from Harvard. John served in the U.S. Air Force, in Germany, after WWII. He was a professor of Philosophy at the University of Washington in Seattle until his retirement in 1996. John has been a guest professor at universities in California, Michigan and New Jersey, and also spent a year at the Institute of Advanced Studies at Princeton, New Jersey. He was also an Oblate of Mount Saviour Monastery since 1974. After his parents died, some friends helped him build a house in Pine City. After his retirement he moved into the renovated milking parlor at Mt. Saviour Monastery. John had advanced pulmonary fibrosis. Breathing became evermore difficult. He was on Hospice care for a few weeks and died peacefully at his home at Mt. Saviour. He passed away on 4 September 2009. A Funeral Mass will be at Mt. Saviour Monastery Monday, 14 September at 10:00 a.m., burial will follow at Mt. Saviour. Donations in John's memory may be made to Mt. Saviour Monastery, Southern Tier Hospice, or a charity of your choice. Light refreshments will be served at St. Joseph Guest House after the burial. Arrangements by McInerny Funeral Home.
