Nicholas Cantando Obituary
CANTANDO,
Nicholas F.
Age 81, of Elmira, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 4, 2010. Nicholas was a son of the late John and Lucy (Bonsignore) Cantando. He was the last surviving of seven children. Nick was predeceased by his siblings, Dominic, John, Anthony and William Cantando, Rosemary Hamilton and Philomena Woods. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Antoinette Liotino Cantando; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Philomena Cantando, Lorraine Cantando, Elizabeth Cantando, Donald Hamilton, Lucy Galvin, Vito and Sylvia Liotino, Peter and MaryLou Liotino. Nick is also survived by 42 inherited children!!, and numerous great nieces and great nephews. He was a veteran of the U S Army where he served as a paratrooper. Nick had worked at Corning Glass Works for 10 years before buying the Plaza Bar and Grill on Pennsylvania Ave. He has been the proprietor of the Plaza for nearly 45 years. Nick was a charter member of the Italian American Veterans Club and a member of American Legion Bentley Post #443. Family and friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, corner of W. Water and Walnut Streets, on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held there on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at 10:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church. Committal prayers and interment, with military honors, will follow at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. In memory of Nicholas, donations may be directed to either, Strong Memorial Hospital, Neuromuscular Clinic, 601 Elmwood Avenue, Rochester NY 14642 or The American Kidney Foundation, 6110 Executive Blvd., Ste. 1010, Rockville MD 20852. Members of the Italian American Veterans Club will meet at McInerny Funeral Home at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 8th, for a prayer service for our deceased comrade Nicholas F. Cantando.

Aunt Annie,
Who does Uncle Nicky think he is leaving us so early! You'll still be expected to carry on Uncle Nicky's holiday tradition at my house....My wooden blocks that spelled "NOEL" always became "LEON" after Uncle Nicky was there! We love you both. I am sad at the passing of a Friend. Nick wasn't just my friend he reminded me of my grandfather because of all the stories and talking about sports we do. He was the first person i really had met when i moved up here from Philadelphia and he treated me and my family like he knew us a long time.In the coulple of years that i knew him he made an impression on me for the kind of person he was.Im just gonna miss hearing him ask whats you gonna have today lad.You will be missed by me and my family. Our prayers are with you Ann. it has always been a bright spot of a day to see Nick and You at the Plaza. Always greeted with a smile.We enjoyed listening to his favorite songs with him when we were there.

Dear Ann,
I did not see Nick for many many years. Until I found an old photo of the our gang! I called Nick and wanted him to have a copy. When he entered
my house, out came the old greeting..........Hey ---. I was so surprised that he could remember that name after so many years. And Nick left after handing me a gift from his bar, God Bless him and all of his sisters and brothers, and their mother and father. They were a great family, and I am glad I was a part of their lives.
It is so sad, when a whole generation is gone.......God Bless them all.
