WYLIE, Frances D. Vater

5/14/1923 - 9/10/2012

The kind and gentle soul of Frances Wylie passed from this earth on September 10, 2012 while residing at Elcor Nursing Facility and after losing her battle with Alzheimer's disease. Fran will be missed by her devoted family: daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Edward Carpenter of Elmira, NY, Kathleen and Joseph Propersi, of Lincoln, CA; daughter-in-law and spouse, Susan and Gerald Speitzer of Glendale, AZ; grandsons and family, Brian, Kate, Patrick, Connor Carpenter of Horseheads, NY, and Todd Carpenter of Poughkeepsie, NY; brother and sister-in-law, Vincent and Jean Vater, of Pittsford, NY; sister-in-law, Joan Kearney Vater, of Honeoye Falls, NY; and many nieces and nephews who filled her life with love and joy. Fran's many special friends always gave her a reason to smile. She lived each day to the fullest and always "lived on the sunny side of the street". Fran was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. "Chub" Wylie, Sr.; son, Charles A. Wylie, Jr.; parents, Alfred and Margaret Hause Vater; brother, Charles "Chuck" Vater; sister and brother-in-law, Richard and Helen Vater Mann; sister-in-law, Mary Noonan Vater; and many aunts and uncles who helped her become the wonderful woman we knew. She was born May 14, 1923 in Elmira, grew up in Horseheads, and was Valedictorian of the Horseheads High School Class of 1941. Fran attended classes at SUNY Buffalo until WWII began. She relocated her studies and became one of the first graduates of St. Joseph's Hospital Medical Technology Program. Fran loved her work in the hospital laboratory which culminated with her retirement in 1986. Patients, coworkers and doctors always found her to be kind, gentle, and professional. In addition to a career she loved, Fran had another full time job as a loving wife, adoring and ever-present mother and a beloved grandmother and great-grandmother. She was very active with Girl Scouts and led "her girls" to achieve the Marian Award. Fran was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Elmira for over 55 years. Thank you to the wonderful caregivers at The Courtyards at Bethany Village, and most recently, Elcor Health Services at Colonial Ridge. These dedicated people supported Fran when she could no longer live in her cherished home at 370 Fulton Street in Elmira.
