Elmira: ROBINSON, JOEL C., age 97, of Elmira, NY passed away February 23, 2013. Born in Sayre, PA in 1915, he was the son of Joel C. Robinson and Clara Bolich. Joel is survived by his loving wife of 70 years Hazel Lerf Robinson; children Lynn Marshall of Lewisville, TX; Jean Andrews (Robert) of Severna Park, MD; Wendy Carroll (Duke) of Elmira and Joel (Linda) of Elmira. Also surviving Joel are 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Joel received his law degree from Columbus University and joined the FBI as a special agent. He then served in the Counter Intelligence Corps of the U.S. Army during World War II. Returning to Elmira in 1946, Joel worked in the lumber & building materials industry eventually opening Robinson Lumber in 1957. Joel was active in many community organizations including the Elmira College Board of Trustees, Arnot Ogden Hospital Board of Governors, Chemung Canal Trust Company Board of Directors, Kiwanis member for 55 years, and President of The Whiz Kids (a civic group that during the 1960's worked toward the betterment of downtown Elmira). Joel also was a member of the Elmira Sports Hall of Fame for basketball and tennis. Per his request there will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 2, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 1054 W. Clinton St., Elmira, NY 14905. We wish to extend our sincere gratitude to First Care and the Veteran's Administration for their support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may remember Joel with a donation to the Sullivan Trail Chapter of American Red Cross, 911 Stowell St., Elmira, NY 14901.
