Paul W. Bennett Jr. Obituary
Bennett, Paul W., Jr.

Corning: Dr. Paul W. Bennett, Jr., age 90, of 4th Street in Corning, NY, died Saturday, April 27, 2013, at Corning Hospital following a long life well lived. Doc was born on June 11, 1922 in Syracuse, NY to Paul and Charlotte (O'Meara) Bennett. He married Patricia Bugman, the love of his life, on July 3, 1946 in Buffalo. He served his country during the occupation of Germany following World War II as a dentist (Lt. JG) in the Navy. Paul was raised in Auburn, NY, graduating from Holy Family High School. He then completed his under graduate studies at Niagara University, and graduated from the University of Buffalo Dental School in 1945. Doc came to Corning to open his dental practice in the fall of 1947, building a large family practice over the years. His patients were like an extended family to him. He took great pride in providing the best quality care and most modern methods available at the time. He retired in 1995. All of his activities were centered around his family. He was immensely proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Paul had a lifelong commitment to his family, his patients, his church, and his community. He truly appreciated the natural beauty of the Corning area and the Finger Lakes, with Keuka Lake being his favorite spot in the world. A perfect summer afternoon would find him out sailing, and then celebrating the season with a family barbeque. He loved music and his playing was memorable both on the piano and the trumpet. Doc enjoyed sailing trips in the Caribbean with his family, and exploring areas of the Far East and Europe. He was a fine woodworker and cabinet maker. His patients referred to him as "Painless Paul" and after retirement he became "Project Paul." He absolutely loved following college and professional football, especially Notre Dame and the Bills. Doc's community involvements include being a member and past President of the Dental Society of the NYS 7th District, past President of Saint Mary's Parish Council, past President of the Corning Catholic School Board, a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, and the Keuka Lake Association. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; four daughters, Patricia (Judge David) Kahl of Corning, Dr. Maryann (Atty. Bruce) Petrie of Cincinnati, OH, Dr. Kathleen (Dr. Stephen Kondash) Bennett of Cincinnati, OH, and Barbara (Jean Claude) Kyrillos of San Diego, CA; two sons, Mark (Betsy) Bennett of Darien, CT and Dr. Gregory (Gina) Bennett of Orchard Park, NY; sister, Jean Magill of Lyons, NY; twenty-three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Patricia Bennett of Wilmington, NC; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Doc was predeceased by his sons, Paul W. Bennett III and John "JT" Bennett; and by a brother, Thomas Bennett. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, at St. Mary's Church, 155 State Street in Corning. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Corning. There will be no calling hours. The family will provide flowers and suggest that any memorial donations be made in his name to Health Ministry of the Southern Tier, Southern Tier Food Bank, or to Father Brennan's Scholarship Fund at All Saints Academy. Doc's family wishes to thank the staff at Absolute Care of Three Rivers and the Corning Hospital for their excellent care and compassion at the end of his life, and have entrusted his care to Haughey Funeral Home, Inc. 216 E. First Street in Corning.
