Ziff, Bertram A.

Bertram A Ziff passed away peacefully on July 20, 2013 in the lovely Zen Hospice of San Francisco, at age 97. Bert was born on April 4, 1916 and grew up in Elmira, New York, one of five children of Isador and Esther Ziff. With the clear purpose of becoming an attorney he attended Cornell University and graduated with his JD in 1938. He was a member of Army Intelligence Services and served proudly in World War II. For close to 60 years, Bert was a lawyer in Elmira. He had a passion for his work and was known for his eloquence and intensity in the courtroom. He set the bar high for being a defense attorney in the Twin Tiers. Bert also had passionate hobbies such as racquetball, fishing, gardening and building exquisite dollhouses with his wife. The latter were regularly donated to the Rotary Club to be raffled. Bert took care of his ill wife for many years after retiring, and then moved with her to New York City where he successfully had surgery for lung cancer at age 90. He moved to San Francisco in October, 2012 to live with his daughter. He is survived by his wife, Elinor, his daughters, Dori Jinnett and Margery Ziff, his granddaughters Brynn Putnam and Maren Jinnett, his sons-in-law Jeff Jinnett and Al Snapp, and many loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 25 at Congregation Kol Ami at 1:00 PM. Interment will follow at Temple B'nai Israel Cemetery, Elmira, Abraham Golos officiating.
