Wendell E. Smith, 82 of 219 Leisure Lane, Horseheads, NY, passed away Sunday, October 27, 2013 in the Arnot Ogden Medical Center, Elmira, NY. Born in Mainesburg, PA, August 19, 1931 son of the late Aaron and Margaret (Webster) Smith. Wendell married Shirley Boyce July 14, 1957 in Blossburg, PA, she survives him. He graduated from Mansfield PA High School, class of 1950 then served during the Korean war with the U.S. Army. Wendell was an Insurance Agent, employed by Prudential Insurance, Corning, NY for thirty-five years, retiring in 1993. He had formerly been employed with Garrisons Mens Shop in Mansfield. He was a member of the Corning, then Horseheads Elks Club, former President of the Insurance Underwriters Association and was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church of Corning. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, reading and ping pong. Wendell volunteered for many years with the LPGA and also at Corning Hospital. Surviving are his wife, Shirley; two daughters, Babette Smith and Amy Beth (Paul) VanDelinder both of Painted Post, NY; sisters: Betty (Clif) Rice of Wabasso, FL, Marian Talbot of Vero Beach, FL, Geraldine Worden of Mansfield, PA and Juanita (Art) Mixell of Williamsport, PA; brothers: Ellsworth (Janet) Smith of Mansfield, PA, Roger (Carole) Smith of Mansfield, PA, Wilbur (Carolyn) Smith of Wellsboro, PA, Kenneth (Nancy) Smith of Mainesburg, PA, Chester Smith of Mainesburg, PA and Theodore (Alice) Smith of Crystal River, FL; grandson, Reese VanDelinder of Painted Post; two beautiful grandaughters, Megan Smith of Ithaca, NY and Emily VanDelinder of Painted Post; many nieces, nephews and cousins, and his buddy dog, "Buster". Friends will be received Friday, November 1st from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at the Phillips Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 17 W. Pulteney St. in Corning. Funeral services with military honors will be Saturday at 1:00pm at the funeral home with Rev. Judy White officiating, private burial will be at Bath National Cemetery in Bath. Memorials in his name may be left to Corning, Southeast Steuben County Library, 300 Nasser Civic Center Plaza, Suite 101 Corning NY 14830.
