Richard A. Lewis, age 80, formerly of Addison Rd., Addison, NY passed away on Saturday, January 18, 2014, at Bethany Manor, Horseheads, NY after a lengthy illness. He was born on August 6, 1933 in Addison, NY, the son of the late Leo and Hazel (Mose) Lewis. Richard married Betty Gessi on November 16, 1974 in Addison, NY. Richard worked as farmer for 18 years alongside his brother-in-law, Frank. In 1973 he became a milk tester for the New York Dairy Herd Improvement Cooperative of Ithaca, NY, retiring in 1995 with 22 years of service. Richard was a long-term member of the First Presbyterian Church of Addison, NY. He will be remembered for his love of music, reading, and anything western. He also enjoyed watching baseball, specifically the New York Mets. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Betty Lewis of Horseheads, NY, Patrick Lewis of Addison, NY, Matthew Lewis of Addison, NY; stepchildren, Patricia (Patrick) Nelson of Horseheads, NY, Coleen Hammond, Lawrence (Linda) Gessi, and Joseph Gessi, all of Elmira, NY and Susan (William) Speed of York, PA; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Pauline Lewis, Corning, NY; nephew, Jim Lewis of Cincinnati, OH; dear friends, Jim and Norma Croft of Lancaster, PA; and caring neighbors, Ron and Linda Bates of Addison, NY. In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by brother, Harold Lewis and his son, Lawrence; and sister, Geraldine Rounds, her husband, Frank Rounds and their daughter, Jill Cooper. Family and friends are invited to call on Wednesday, January 22, 2014, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Carpenter-Flint Funeral Home, 10 Wall St., Addison, NY. A funeral service will immediately follow at the funeral home at 12:00 p.m., Rev. Peter Marr officiating. Burial will take place in the family plot at Addison Rural Cemetery, Addison, NY. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to send memorial donations in Richard's name may do so to the: Corning VFW Post 524, 281 Baker St., Corning, NY 14830.
