Devenport, Arthur "Art," Sr.
Arthur "Art" Devenport, Sr., age 90, formerly of Canal Street, Big Flats, NY, passed away on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at The Green Home in Wellsboro, PA. Born June 27, 1924 in Big Flats, NY, he was the son of the late Arthur and Edna B. (Churcher) Devenport. Arthur served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II from 1942 -1945 and participated in the Pacific campaigns of Tarawa, Saipan, and Tinian. He later received his Bachelor's Degree from Vanderbilt University in 1952. Arthur married Dorothy Hendrick in 1946 in Rochester, NY. She predeceased him in July of 2005. After college, Arthur worked as an electrical engineer for Corning Glass Works in Corning, NY, retiring in 1984 with 40 years of service. Following his retirement, Art rehabilitated rental homes throughout the Big Flats and Corning communities. In addition, he also built and owned four New York State Trooper stations. Art was an active member and former President of the ASPCA, the Big Flats Historical Society, and the Horseheads Board of Education in the 1960's. He was also an active member of the Big Flats American Legion in the 1950's. He is survived by one daughter, Pamela (Mark Pettitt) Devenport of Syracuse, NY; two sons, Arthur (Patchara) Devenport, III of Chicago, IL, Craig (April) Devenport of Wellsboro, PA; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Friends and family are invited to call on Thursday, July 24, 2014 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Carpenter's Funeral Home, LLC, 14 E. Pulteney St., Corning, NY. A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 25, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 95 Main St., Big Flats, NY, Rev. Richard Price officiating. Interment with full military rites will follow at the family plot in Rural Home Cemetery, Big Flats.
