Marie Clogher Malaro

EASTON - Marie Clogher Malaro passed away at Heartfields Assisted Living in Easton, at the age of 85, after an extended illness. Marie was the daughter of Eaton James Clogher and Marie Louise Clogher (Grenier) of Madison, Conn.
She was a wife, mother, friend, lawyer, author and university professor. Despite all her accomplishments, her family always came first.
Marie graduated from Regis College in 1954 and Boston College Law School in 1957. She spent several years as legal counsel for the Connecticut State legislature before she married and moved to the Washington, D.C., area.
For many years, she was legal counsel for the Smithsonian Institution and later was director of the graduate program in museum studies at the George Washington University. When she retired, she continued to teach online as professor emerita. Marie is widely known for her books and many articles, as well as her 20 years of participation in the American Law Institute/American Bar Association's annual seminar, "Legal Problems of Museum Administration." Her books include "Museum Governance; Mission, Ethics, Policy," 1994, and "A Legal Primer on Managing Museum Collections," which was published in its third edition in 2012.
During her long career, she was very generous with her talent and expertise, providing extensive pro bono legal advice and assistance. When she retired, she devoted much of her time to volunteer work, providing legal services to numerous organizations, including the Queen Anne's County Historical Society, the Museum of Eastern Shore Life and CASA. Marie was a devoted Catholic and spent much time doing volunteer work for the church (Our Mother of Sorrows in Centreville). She was also devoted to patient care and spent several years as a hospice patient volunteer and president of the hospice board.
She was preceded by her brother, Paul; and is survived by her husband of 56 years, James C. Malaro of Centreville, Md.; son, James and his wife Megan Malaro of Stevensville, Md.; daughter, Amy Neff, husband Joseph and children Raymond and Bryana Neff of Warrington, Pa.; her brother's wife, Rosemarie Clogher of Wallingford, Conn.; her sister, Patricia C. Sherman of Newbury, N.H.; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 30, at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church in Centreville, Md.
