BAYARD - James Edward Baird, 71, passed away Monday, Jan. 14, 2013 at Chimney Rock Villa in Bayard.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. at Bayard Cemetery with Ann Bairn, PMA officiating. Military honors by the Nebraska Army National Guard. Casual attire is requested.
Memorials may be given to the Festival of Hope. Tributes of sympathy may be www.bbchapels.com. Bayard Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
James was born on a farm near Lisco, Neb. June 7, 1941 to Harry and Erma Baird. James was one of seven children. At an early age moved with his family near Broadwater. He was baptized and confirmed at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Broadwater. James graduated from Broadwater High School in 1959. After working on a ranch for a year, he joined the U.S. Army, serving three years and attaining the rank of SP5. After being honorably discharged, Jim met and married Sandra Loose, July 17, 1965 and to this union three children were born.
Jim drove truck over the road for over 35 years, but still had time to coach GO baseball and girls' softball in Gering. He drove from Atlantic to the Pacific and Canada to Mexico.
In 1999, James had triple by-pass, so he got off the road. Working seasonal jobs with Co-op, Westco and Schiff partnership until ill health forced him into full retirement. Jim was a very proud father and grandfather. His grandchildren were his special love. He was very proud of their accomplishments in school and sports.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Sandy; sons, Chris of Bayard and Steve (Lena) of Melbeta; daughter, Jennifer and Mindy of Gering; grandchildren, Jessica, Justin and Tyler; brother, Clyde (Bobbie) of Gering; sisters, Julie and Alma of Aurora, Colo. and Helen (Bob) of Chadron; very special aunt, Marie Keenan of Bridgeport and numerous nieces and nephews.
His parents, brothers Henry and Roy, preceded James in death.
