Michael Autorino Obituary

Michael L. Autorino Jr. from Verona, N.J., passed away on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013 at St. Barnabas Medical Center, with his wife and cousins at his side. Family and friends are invited on Thursday, Nov. 7, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. to the Caggiano Memorial Home, 62 Grove St., Montclair, N.J. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Friday, Nov. 8, at 10 a.m. at St. Aloysius Church, 219 Bloomfield Ave., Caldwell, N.J. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover, N.J. Visit caggianomemorial.com. Michael was born in Mountainside Hospital (maternity wing in Glen Ridge, N.J.), the son of Michael Autorino Sr. of Montclair and Olga Boratto Autorino of Union City, N.J. He attended Montclair schools, graduated from Montclair High School, received his B.A. from Montclair State College and taught technology - TV production, wood, metal, plastics, electronics, mechanical drawing and set construction in Montclair for 43 years. He gained his master's degree at William Paterson College and then did additional course work in administration at Montclair State. Michael was the beloved husband of 50 years of Marianne (Elkovich), with many cousins, nieces, nephews. He loved to entertain and was serious about staying fit with regular workouts - upper and lower body and cardio. Mike had a way of solving any problem that came his way. He could build, design and make anything. A confirmed, ardent and successful "do it yourself"- er, there was no task too big or too small for him to master. He restored his first new car, a 1966 Oldsmobile 442, to pristine condition. He was working on his van and his 1956 Oldsmobile that he had when dating Marianne. Mike loved trains so he created special camera mounts for unique film footage of steam engines - before present day special effects. His spectacular Christmas train display brought joy and wonder to friends and family. He produced several industrial films for railroads and was the recipient of a Gold Camera Award and The Technical Film of the Year Award. His beautiful and graceful videography gave many brides and their families the chance to re-enjoy their "special" day. Bar and Bat Mitzvah families could recapture the joy and excitement of this important event in their lives. He designed and built several moveable video camera devices with monitors and lights so he could provide this attention to detail. At Glenfield Middle School, he built a TV studio in his classroom where each school day began with a live TV program produced by his middle school students. They were the talent, the camera operators, editors, sound specialist and off-screen announcers; it was live TV called Glenfield PrimeTime. Michael's passing leaves a large gap in the many lives he has touched in his own unique way.

I was a student under both Mr. Autorino - Metal Shop and Wood Shop at Glenfield Middle School in Montclair, NJ and of his wife Mrs. Autorino - Home Economics teacher of the same school. It was a joy to be in his class between 1989-1991. They were a beautiful couple that showed me many key skills that would mold and shape me into who I am today. Teachers do not get the type of recognition that they deserve and although I am late with sending flowers of appreciation, I will never forget their dedication. RIP Mr. Autorino, thank you for your existence and leaving a wonderful legacy. - Zarifa James - Montclair High School Class of 1996 - [email protected]

I met Mike many years ago when I purchased a 16mm copy of his GG1 railroad film. That film, now more than 30 years old, is still loved by all the groups where it is shown. Mike and his wife, Marianne, also visited the Jersey Central Chapter, after some of their film was incorporated into a documentary about Ross Roland, who was responsible for operating main line steam excursions and the American Freedom Train.

My wife, Marie and I wish to express our deepest condolences to you, Marianne, on Mike's passing. I can well remember his excellent production on the GGl electrics, which our good friend Tom Moran narrated. We met, maybe more than once, at a Delaware Valley Chapter, NRHS banquet. Please know that his memory to the rail enthusiast fraternity will carry on.

In '64 [or '65?], Mr. Autorino was my Industrial Arts teacher in Montclair's Mt. Hebron School, 7th [or 8th] grade basement shop...next door to the wood-working shop where Bob Trevane taught.

Lonnie Spivey, Frank Herbin and others were in our class and holy cow...did Mike show them some eye-opening lessons about decorum...LOL...

No other classmates had a bad word to say about Mike [or Bob], he was probably on everyone's top-ten list of most-respected teachers there [and there were a lot of really wonderful folks there.]
RIP Mike and warm regards to the family.

Mike and Marianne's marriage and love for each other -- their great friendship and partnership in their projects -- will always be an inspiration to me, and a gift to those who witnessed it. How well they worked together, supported each other and cared for each other. Just thinking of them, their love still lives, and death cannot diminish it. He was a sweet, kind and loving soul. Our love and prayers go out for Marianne, that God will keep her safe and very close in His love.

My deepest sympathy to Marianne and family at the sudden passing of Mike. I LOVED working with Mike at Glenfeild. He was always hard working, never complained (OK...once in awhile, but don't we all!) and always had his students in mind when he created projects/classes, etc. He was missed when he retired from GMS and will be missed now. My prayers are with all the family during this difficult time.

I very much enjoyed and appreciated Mike Autorino as a colleague and teaching associate at Glenfield School where we worked together in near proximity on the ground floor of Glenfield School. I missed Mike's leaving Glenfield, and I am saddened at his passing from the Earth. I have hope of seeing him in heaven, if I ever get there.
