William Schwenck Obituary

William R. Schwenck, 75, of Chatham Township, N.J., passed away Friday, Sept. 27, 2013. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 3 p.m. in the Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township on Southern Blvd. Bill was born in Jersey City, N.J., grew up in New Providence, N.J., and earned his Eagle Scout before graduating from Summit High School. He received his B.S. from Rutgers, where he was active in the band and a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. Bill went on to teach in the Summit Middle School for 32 years, where he was active in the "STOKES" program for 25 of those years. An avid photographer, camper and Maine-iac, he taught his family to love the outdoors and believed that sometimes you have to work hard to have fun! Always a drum corps nut, he volunteered with the Morris County Militia Fife and Drum Corps for many years. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Joan E Schwenck (nee Hannaford); four children and their spouses; his sister, Juanita S. Vanderpool; many nieces and nephews, and 10 beloved grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by family and friends while smiling down on us and saying "I'm fine." In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Chatham Emergency Squad, 45 Spring St., Chatham, N.J. 07928.

Dearest Schwencks.
As some of the more recent Bill Schwenck fans, I can say that the girls and I will miss Grandpa Schwenck very much. There are so many things that will remind me personally of Bill -- his voice, his humor and his sincerity. He really impacted our lives. His quintessential phrases come through his family now and that is the "pudding" aka the "proof". He was a true teacher through and through. I am proud of the things that I learned about him and from him in the last seven years. I consider myself his student too. The way the family has bonded together this past week is exactly what Bill cherished . I am so grateful to be a part of your family.

I will truly miss you Mr. Schwenck. You were like a second father to me. Comforting me when I was scared and teaching me photography when I became so intrigued with it.

I will miss the family dinners and the pancake breakfasts. I will truly miss your silly nature and our camping trip.

My love to all of you and know that he is now watching over you from up above.

Mr. Schwenk was a kind and generous teacher. The Stokes program was a formative experience for me both as a participant in 6th grade and counselor in 11th and 12th.
Summit schools were stronger for his years of dedication.

Regards to Gary (who I knew back in the 1980's) and to the rest of the family.

A wonderful teacher. I remember him so much younger than this picture! (I graduated from SHS in 1968.) Good to think about the many years he had to be a wonderful teacher to so many others after me.

I was Mr. Schwenk's 7th grade science class almost 50 years ago, and I still remember his energy, sense of humor, and his love for the craft of teaching, making us hit 15 lab stations in one period, promising to return our October density lab reports sometime before July. He loved his subject, and he loved working with kids. That's been a personal inspiration to me over my last 39 years.of teaching.

Mr. Schwenck was my 7th grade Science teacher in 1966 -67. He was one of the few teachers to engage this very hyper student. He was the definition of "teacher."
