GREENSBORO, NC -- Austin A. James, 87, departed this life on January 5, 2013. He was born on November 1, 1925 in Duplin County, NC and was the son of Albro and Julie James. Mr. James moved to Greensboro, NC in 1949 where he was the owner/operator of the Guilford Soda Shop for 40 years, located in downtown Greensboro. He was an active member of College Park Baptist Church for many years but most recently was an active member of Friendly Avenue Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Carolyn W. James, brother, Maurice James and grandson, Nathan L. Kizzar. He is survived by his children, Dwight James (Patty), Gala J. Kizzar (Don), and Bryan James (Martha), sister Helen Horne (Hosea), brothers Orlan James (Joyce), William James (Helen), his grandchildren, Alison and Chris James, Travis Kizzar and Dylan and Griffin James, and many nieces and nephews. He was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend who never met a stranger.

His family will receive friends at Forbis & Dick Funeral Service Guilford Chapel on Tuesday, January 8 from 6-8 p.m. Funeral service will be Wednesday, January 9 at 2 p.m. at Friendly Avenue Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Westminster Gardens Cemetery.

The family wishes to express gratitude to the staff of WhiteStone Care and Wellness Center and Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro. A special thanks to the staff and care givers of Home Instead who enriched his life and supported our family for many years.
