Cathy Doran, a valiant, admired and happy person, died peacefully, at her home in Porters Neck, on December 30, 2012, after several years of declining health. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend to countless people here and across the country.

Catherine Vickers Frawley was born in New Haven, Connecticut on July 22, 1942, to Caryle V. and Mary Deegan Frawley. She graduated from Branford (CT) High School in 1960 and from the University of New Hampshire in 1964 with a BA in Microbiology. She worked at the "Jimmy Fund" in Boston, until her marriage to William Y. Doran in 1965. When her eldest child was licensed to drive, Cathy went back to school to master the then-emerging field of computer programming. With her children raised and off to college, she went to work as a programmer for Social and Scientific Systems in Bethesda, MD and Merck Pharmaceuticals in Woodbridge, NJ, where she specialized in clinical trials. She and her husband retired in 1994 and relocated to Wilmington.

While in high school, Cathy was recognized for a "most pleasing personality". The depth and breadth of this trait became ever so more apparent as she dealt with the many facets of life. A quiet, unassuming and sincere woman, she cultivated friendships wherever she lived-and she lived many places. Raising her children and volunteering in areas related to children occupied much of her time. A Brownie leader, a school fair organizer, youth soccer reporter in Virginia, and the creator of an elementary school library in California are but a few examples. Later years found her with the American Red Cross and the Festival of Trees in Wilmington. Diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 1992, it recurred in 1997 and she began a fight for her life that left many in awe of her courage and tenacity as she dealt with any number of unforeseen and difficult challenges complicating her goal of recovery.

Cathy loved to travel. She enjoyed golf as a committed 9-holer, the Garden Club, her Alpha Chi Omega sisters, and her colorful bridge groups. As her health declined, she had to give up many of her favorite activities and accepted it with grace and dignity. She focused her attention on bridge, the sisters and her family. She loved her Red Sox, her Packers, and her daily glass of wine! But she loved nothing more than her family. Educating, encouraging, enlightening, and yes, disciplining, she was always there.

Cathy is survived by Bill, her loving husband of nearly 48 years, her children: Mary Deborah Doran Mercier (Jeremy) of Norwalk, CT; William Y. Jr. of Edwards, CO; and Michael F. (Michelle) of Colfax, NC. She took great pride in each, and in her four grandsons: Jake and Justin Doran and Tommy and Charlie Mercier. She is also survived by her sister, Diane Smoko (Frank) of Meridan, CT.

The family will receive visitors from 6-8pm, Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 11am, Thursday, January 10, 2013, at St. Mark Catholic Church.
