Edwin Lawrence Combs Sr.



Edwin Lawrence Combs, Sr., age 96, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died on December 14, 2012. He was born January 18, 1916, in Bryson City, North Carolina. He was the son of the late Allie Bryan Combs and Florence Bell Sawyer. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Julia Moseley Combs, his brother Alfred Bryan Combs and his sisters Virginia Dobbs and Louise Wall. He grew up in Elizabeth City and Raleigh.

He graduated from Needham Broughton High School and Wake Forest College. He began his career as a chemistry teacher and later worked for the NC Department of Agriculture. He was a World War II veteran serving in the South Pacific with the U. S. Navy. After the war he moved to Maryland and was employed by the Food and Drug Administration and the General Services Administration in Washington, DC. He continued to serve in the Naval Reserve retiring as a Captain.

In 1973 Edwin retired to Olde Point in Hampstead where he loved family, golfing, boating and fishing. He was active in the community serving as the president of Hampstead's first Civic Association, helping to build a branch library, serving two terms as president of the Moore's Creek Battleground Association and singing in the choir at Hampstead United Methodist Church. He was an avid scout leader working with Boy Scouts for 50 years and received scouting's highest award, the Silver Beaver. He also was an active participant in the Pender County Historical Society. He and Julia were longtime volunteers at the museum in Burgaw. They also shared a love for genealogy and both wrote family histories.

Edwin is survived by his son Larry Combs and his wife, Jane, of Topsail Beach, and his daughter Julia Somers and her husband Preston of Hampstead. He will be fondly remembered by grandchildren: Bryan Combs and his wife Susan of Charlotte, Trevor Somers and his wife Nina of San Francisco, CA, Edwin Combs and his wife Annie, of Tuscaloosa, AL, Ethan Somers of Tucson, AZ, Meredith Parrish and her husband Walt of Charlotte, and Lee Somers and his wife Elisabeth of Montevallo, AL. His great-grandchildren are Rebecca Combs, Elizabeth Combs, Virginia Combs, Margaret Combs, Marshall Combs, Julia Parrish, Bennett Parrish, Boyd Parrish, and Ilona Somers.

A graveside service will be held at 4 PM on Sunday, December 16, at Maplewood Cemetery in Kinston, NC, with Pastor Randy Maynard officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 222 South 17th Street, Wilmington, NC 28401 or to Hampstead United Methodist Church, 15395 U.S. Highway 17, Hampstead, NC 28443.
