ELSIE R BOYCE Elsie R. Boyce, 83 years and 11 months old, of Wilmington, died May 15, 2013. She is survived by James (Jim) Boyce, her husband of 61 years, and her sister Sarah Wagner (Bob). She is also survived by her daughters Nancy (Robert) of McCloud, CA, Sarah (Phil) of Greensboro, NC, and Elizabeth of Gisborne, NZ, and 3 grandchildren, Kristen, Erika (Brandon) and PJ. Elsie was born June 7, 1929 in Buena Vista, VA. Her grandfather, Calvin Graham Dold, MD, delivered her to her parents, Garvice and Emma Ridings. She grew up in Summit, NJ and received a BA in Math with a minor in art from Pembroke College in Brown University. After graduation she was one of the first women hired by Bell Labs in a technical position (calculating trajectories for the Nike I guided missile). Elsie and husband Jim raised 3 daughters in Summit, NJ. At the age of 50, they began a new adventure-moving to Leawood, KS-from where, 16 years later, they retired to the good life in Wilmington. Elsie is a well-regarded painter in the Wilmington art community. She began drawing at the early age of 2 and continued to draw and paint throughout her school years. Once her youngest daughter left for college, she was able to focus more of her energy on painting. Her work, especially work depicting faces, has been in national shows and won awards. She is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and National Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylics, and several regional art associations. She has been featured in 'American Artist', the Wilmington Star News, and 'WILMA' magazine. Most recently, her work was on display at 621N4TH gallery in a solo retrospective show.
