HAROLD GENE PING
Harold Gene Ping, 87, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2013, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Gene was born in Mattoon, Illinois, October 25, 1925, son of the late Charles P. and Sarah S. Ping. Preceding him in death were his siblings; Ray, Gleason, Charles, Virginia, and his twin sister, Gerry.
Gene was a World War II
veteran having served his country in the U.S. Navy
aboard LST 808 in the Pacific. His ship was on the beach near the base of Iwo Jima allowing him to witness one of the greatest moments of WWII - the raising of our Flag on Iwo Jima. The ship was later torpedoed at IE Shima. They also participated in the Okinawa campaign. He remained close to those who served with him and was instrumental in organizing their reunions for many years. Following the war he continued working for the U.S. Navy as a transportation specialist until his retirement in January, 1981.
Gene is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Rhoda S. Ping and their children; Tom, wife Alecia; Cheryl, husband Tom; Doug, wife Jeannie; Mike, wife Irene; Tim, wife Vickie; and Carroll, husband Fred. Grandchildren; Darrell, Michael L., Ricky, Kristin, Erin, Sarah, Tim, Mike S., Matt, Jamie, Denise, Michelle, Mike S. and Ashley, as well as the many loving great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews too many to count.
The family wishes to thank the staff at NHRMC for the wonderful care provided to Gene in his final days. In addition the family wishes to give special thanks to Judi O'Hara from Home Instead Senior Services for all the wonderful care and support she has provided and will continue to provide to the family.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm until 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 13, 2013, at Andrews Mortuary, 1617 Market Street, Wilmington. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the Market Street Chapel. The graveside burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 1311 Shipyard Blvd., Wilmington, immediately following the funeral service.
