JAMES "JIM" LUTHER GREENTREE, 86, OF WILMINGTON, DIED THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2012 AT NEW HANOVER REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER.
Jim was born March 4, 1926 in Baltimore, MD, son of the late Luther R. Greentree and Treva Wirtz Greentree. He was the last surviving member of the Greentree family, his five sisters preceding him in death.
Mr. Greentree proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy
during World War II
and was an original member of the local group "World War II Remembered". He worked for Western Electric for 32 years and moved to Wilmington after his retirement joining with the local group of Telephone Pioneers. Jim was athletic all his life so he joined into the Senior Games taking part in such things as archery, horseshoes, table tennis, golf, bowling, croquet and even more. For many years he held the record for the longest softball throw of his age group in the North Carolina Senior Games. He also represented the state in four National Senior Games, three times in archery and once in table tennis doubles.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Eleanor Greentree. Also surviving him from his first marriage are his daughter, Lisa Woody and husband, Kevin, of Hanover, PA; step-daughter, Diana Evans of Baltimore, MD. Also many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
