ROBERT H. CUTTING, 1918-2012

Robert H. (Bob) Cutting, departed this world in his 94th year on October 17, 2012. Born to George and Irene Cutting in Westwood, Mass on May 7, 1918, during the great flu pandemic, Bob graduated from high school in Medford, Massachusetts during the Great Depression. Like so many of The Greatest Generation, Bob answered the call to arms, enlisting in the Army Air Force (AAF) after the outbreak of World War II. He earned his commission and then trained as a heavy bomber pilot in California, where he met Bonnie Eileen Hinds who would become his first wife in December, 1943. As a B-24 pilot, Bob participated in many of the campaigns widely recognized as turning points in the war in the Pacific, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight.

After the war, Bob and Bonnie settled in Southern California and Bob graduated from what later became the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. They lived first in Whittier and then in Brea where he and Bonnie raised two sons, Robert H. Cutting Jr., of Wilmington, North Carolina and Richard B. Cutting of Rancho Palos Verdes, California. During his career, Bob worked for Pacific Press and later at W.A. Krueger, two major printing companies in the U.S., where his artistic talent served him well to ensure the highest quality printing products to such icons as Dive Magazine, The National Football League, Disney, Sunset, Life, Time, Newsweek, Arizona Highways, Hot Rod, Car and Driver, Motor Trend, Harry & David and of course, Fredericks of Hollywood. Throughout his career, the principals of these companies became close and colorful friends, not just business associates. Along the way, he also dabbled in his own businesses, a graphic arts firm and a restaurant.

Upon retirement Bob and Bonnie lived in Costa Mesa, Clear Lake and Palm Desert, California where they continued to make good friends. Bonnie passed on shortly after they moved to Wilmington in 1995. Later in 1995, Bob had the good fortune of meeting Kathleen Brewer Wood who became the second great love of his life and whom he married in 1996. In addition to his children, Bob leaves his wife Kathleen, also of Wilmington, Robert Jr.'s wife Sally J. MacKain and their two sons, grandsons David and Henry of whom he most proud, and Richard's wife Rebecca Cutting. Bob wished to thank the many kind friends and caregivers at the Brightmore complex and elsewhere who doted over "Mr. Cutting." While he will be dearly missed by his family and friends, they take great comfort in knowing Bob left this world in and at peace. A private memorial service and celebration of his life will be held.
