Walter Anderson Obituary

WALTER C. ANDERSON III

Walter C. Anderson III passed away Sunday, November 21, 2010, at Pineville Rehabilitation Center, in Pineville, NC.

He was born on October 24, 1923, in Mt. Holly, NJ, to Walter C. Anderson II and Katherine Phares Anderson. He grew up in Mt. Holly and in Glenolden, PA.

He served on active duty with the United States Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946 and in the Reserves from 1946 to 1951. He was honorably discharged as a Second Lieutenant.

He graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering from Dartmouth College in 1947. There, he met his future wife, Marion Gaffney. They were married in 1947 and spent 55 happy years together before her death in 2003.

He joined Westinghouse Electric in 1941 and worked for them for the rest of his life, retiring after 45 years. With Westinghouse, he was an electrical engineer, HR manager, recruiter, and corporate trainer. New positions took him to Kansas City, Baltimore, Northern Virginia, and England.

Volunteering was his true love, though, and he dedicated enormous amounts of time to youth sports, Junior Achievement, and the Boy Scouts. When he retired to Southport in 1982, he had a chance to devote his full time to volunteering, doing work for adult literacy, Sacred Heart Church, and - especially - Southport Elementary, where he helped several hours every day up until his last few weeks. He was honored for his efforts by receiving a Governor's Award and also the UNCW Razor Walker Award. He will be sorely missed by his friends at the Dry Street Pub and Sacred Heart Church, and by all the staff and present and past fourth graders at Southport Elementary.

He is survived by his brother Bill Anderson, of S. Dennis, NJ; and by his son Cliff Anderson, daughter-in-law Peggy Anderson, and grandsons Liam and Conor Anderson, all of Charlotte.

A memorial mass will be held 3:00 on Monday, November 29, at Sacred Heart Church, 5269 Dosher Cut Off, Southport NC, with a reception following. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sacred Heart.

"Amen, I say to you. Today, you will be with me in Paradise."
