Walter Taliaferro "Tolly" Hughes Sr.

WALTER TALIAFERRO HUGHES, SR. (TOLLY) Walter Taliaferro Hughes, Sr., (Tolly), of Wilmington, died peacefully on April 26, 2014. Tolly was born on December 27, 1925 to the late James Bettner Hughes and Anne Pendleton Hughes. Also remembered is his special friend of many years, Anne McGriff, who preceded him in death. Tolly is survived by his brother, James Bettner Hughes, Jr., his first wife, Margaret Gaston Johnson, two sons, Walter Taliaferro Hughes, Jr., (Jean), and Grady Gaston Hughes, (Gail), two grandchildren, Margaret Ann Gonella, (John), and Walter Taliaferro "Trey" Hughes III, and one great-grandchild, John Felix Gonella, IV. He was also survived by his nieces and nephews, Annie, Freddie, Margaret, Eleanor, David, Betsy and Katie. Tolly attended Christ School, Episcopal High School and Fishburne Military School. After Pearl Harbor, he joined the US Navy. He was a qualified salvage diver serving on the USS ATR 89. Following the war, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He returned to Wilmington and worked with Hughes Brothers, Inc. and later Hughes Brothers Fuel Company. In the early 70's, he moved to Burlington, NC to become president of Diversified Manufacturing and Marketing Company. In the 80's, he returned to Wilmington to again operate Hughes Properties Inc. Tolly loved golf and could be found most days playing with his usual group. He was a life member of Cape Fear Country Club and The Carolina Yacht Club. He was a member of St. James Parish and a past member of L'Arioso German Club.The family would like to thank the staff at Autumn Care of Myrtle Grove as well as a heartfelt thanks to his good friends, Erma McClellan and Donald Sneeden, Jr., who took an extra special interest in him. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 10:30 Friday, May 2, 2014 at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel followed by a graveside service beginning at 11:00 am in Oakdale Cemetery with The Rev. Richard Vollers Hanson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 202 West 24th Street, Lumberton, NC 28358.
