Araceli Cabeiro McShane, 82, passed away recently at her home in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Known as "Lee," she was an active member of St. Mark Roman Catholic Parish there serving as a lector and greeter, and volunteering in the office, especially helpful with the Hispanic parishioners. Mrs. McShane was also a member of St. Mark's Columbiettes, and served for a time as recording secretary. Prior to her retirement she was an executive secretary for several prestigious New York City law firms including Paul,, Weiss, Kaye, Scholer, and Webster & Sheffield, former NYC Mayor John V. Lindsay's firm. An avid reader, she loved to travel, particularly in Spain.
Mrs. McShane is survived by two daughters, Bianca ("Bonnie") Chronowski (James J.) Brophy and Robin Silver (Demarest S.) Newman; and three grandchildren, Christopher B. Dixon, Meghan T. Brophy, and Annabel S. Newman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Judge Hugh F. McShane, who had four children, several grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
Her previous marriage to Thomas Chronowski ended in divorce. Additional survivors include her sisters, Flora M. Cabeiro and Rina Cabeiro Radov, several nieces and nephews, an aunt and many other relatives.
A native New Yorker, Mrs. McShane was active in politics as a Conservative Party supporter, and served on boards of charitable organizations including the Queens Speech & Hearing Center.
She retained a lifelong love of dance after studying flamenco for many years. Mrs. McShane graduated summa cum laude from Hunter College with a B.A. in Classical Studies, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
Friends and family may call at Paul Ippolito Summit Memorial 7 Summit Avenue, Summit on Wednesday, January 23rd from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. The funeral will begin on Thursday, January 24th with visitation at 9:30am followed by A Mass of Christian Burial at 10:45am. Interment will take place at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, New York. A future memorial Mass in Wilmington, NC, to be announced.
