Bessie Marie Stephens Maxey of Wilmington, NC and formerly of Richmond, VA, died Friday, February 15, 2013 at Cape Fear Hospital.

She was born June 26, 1918 in Horry County, SC to the late William Arthur and Marie High Stephens, the youngest of twelve children. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Herman B. Maxey, Jr. and all eleven of her siblings, Minnie Lee Brown, Margaret Ruth Vereen, Charles Whitman Stephens, Theodore A. "Buddy" Stephens, Willie H. Stephens, Mary V. Saunders, Vernice A. Stephens, Martin Luther Stephens, Leon A. Stephens, Oreener O'Quinn, and Idell Ballard.

Mrs. Maxey was formerly a member of the Pinehurst Baptist Church in Richmond, VA.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister.

Surviving are two daughters, Marie Yancey of Gainesville, VA, and Janet Crews of Wilmington, NC; one son, Bob Maxey and wife Linda of Wilmington, NC; six grandchildren, Allyson Lynn Hackney, Robin Marie Baker, Kimberly Gobble, Matthew Walton and wife Heather, Scott Maxey, and Brian Maxey; seven great grandchildren; a brother in law, Raymond Maxey and wife Laverne of Richmond, VA; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Her grandson, Rev. Matt Walton will be officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 pm until 8 pm Monday at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel.
