DANIEL GREY ALDERMAN, JR. Daniel Grey Alderman, Jr., of Wilmington, went home to his Lord on June 10, 2018 after a lengthy respiratory illness. He was born April 9, 1939 in Rose Hill, NC. Dan was married to his high school sweetheart, Carolyn, for 59 years. He was predeceased by his loving parents, Maude Stilley and Daniel Grey Alderman, whose Christian influence and examples molded Dan's life. He was also predeceased by his sisters, Frances Quinn and Lila Grey Alderman, three brother-in-laws, and a nephew. In addition to his wife Carolyn, he is survived by his sisters Pansy Elliott of Edenton, NC, Irene Rivenbark of Wallace, NC, and nieces and nephews. Dan retired from CSX in 1995 after a 35 year career with the railroad. The Alderman's motto on their Coat of Arms reads in English "As Faithful as the Sundial to the Sun". Dan's life reflected this lofty motto. He was faithful to his family and his job, but most important to his spiritual beliefs. Dan was a nature lover and loved his feathered and furry friends. For over 50 years he feed and provided a safe haven for his birds, often giving them names. They rewarded him with years of solace as he watched from his small back porch. Dan was an avid reader and often said that he traveled through books. His favorite topic was World War II but he most often quoted passages from "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck. Dan was loquacious and he enjoyed telling stories of his youth and railroading days. The family often suspected that he may have exaggerated a bit when telling his fishing stories and of his metal detecting finds. A graveside service will be held at Oleander Memorial Gardens, 11:00A.M., June 13, 2018. In lieu of flowers donations may be given in Dan's memory to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401. Condolences to the family at www.andrewsmortuary.com.
