David Piacente of Leland , N.C. passed away on Friday, January 18, 2013 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center after a recent illness. He was born in Newark , N.J., the eldest child of Anthony and Marion Piacente and spent his youth in Linden, N.J.

He is survived by his wife Catherine (Syby) Piacente and his two daughters, Kate and Claudia; his sister, Ellen Piacente; his sister Carol(Piacente) Lipnitz.

He attended Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. and through adulthood supported the Maroon Club and Friends of Football there. He rarely missed the annual Lafayette-Lehigh football game, the longest played football rivalry.

After Lafayette, David attended Temple Medical School in Philadelphia followed by service in the U.S. Army Medical Corps at Letterman Army Medical Center, Lansdstuhl Germany and Eisenhower Medical Center in Georgia. He pursued private radiology practice in Columbus Ga. followed by a long term private practice in Hackettstown, NJ.

David was known for his dry wit, some of it enhanced by his devotion to Monty Python and his compassion for animals in need. He was sometimes known as "the cat whisperer". He also was a great Jimmy Buffet fan and attended quite a few of his concerts. His real affection was for his family, supporting his daughters in softball, soccer, swimming, fencing and rugby. He enjoyed military history and was a big fan of the local Civil War sites and the USS North Carolina.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Thursday, January 24, 2013 at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.
